Satisfying Summer

Malcolm and Nigel
Hello friends, and I do hope that you're all enjoying the summer as much as I am. The days here on Cape Cod have been, for the most part, pleasantly warm and sunny, if not a tad on the hot side. I have spent a glorious summer catching up on my napping, which has been a blessing, after my health scare of last spring! The best news is that all signs of both infection and cancer are gone and I am feeling fit as a fine feline should! I'm told that I don't look anywhere near my 16 years, and certainly I have felt the return of my youth this summer.

The photo is of my housemates Malcolm (tabby) and Nigel, who are best of  friends and tend to pal about all day together. Here they are sitting on the stool, covered with a soft blanket, that the maid puts by the screen door when she is at home during the summer months. We all love to take turns sitting in this prized spot to watch the world go by on a leisurely summer afternoon. The maid snapped this candid shot from the front steps!

I have a few words of wisdom to impart to my readers before I close out this summer update. I have learned, through the trial of having a very bad bladder infection and a cancerous tumor on my abdomen, that VETS (yes, I said the word out loud!) really are what our human friends are always trying to tell us.... while they may be annoying, difficult, and a bit scary, they really are trying to help us, and when our human friends take us there it is out of love for us that they do so. Try to remember this the next time you are coerced into visiting yours. It won't make the visit any more pleasant (they DO insist on poking so, don't they?), but rest assured that you are loved and well cared for.

I shall end here for now with end-of-summer greetings to all my feline and human friends out there in the catosphere, and best wishes for an enjoyable transition soon to fall.

Happy News!

Hello again, and here is a photo of myself napping with young Charles, of whom I am actually quite fond.

Well, I have some favorable news to share...
my tumor was removed two weeks ago, and Friday I had the annoying stitches removed! There is no telling if the cancer is all gone or not, and no indication as to how much precious time I have left to live. But, the tumor is gone off my abdomen, which is a good thing, as it was growing rapidly. My maid is quite relieved and admonishes me to live at least one more year so she can get her money's worth! The nerve! (Apparently the cost of the laser surgery that I underwent was exorbitant.)

At any rate, we are still waiting for news from the v** as to whether or not the infection I had has been cleared by the three week course of antibiotics that I was forced to endure. If so, then I will be declared healthy and no more trips to the v** in the foreseeable future for me!

I do hope that everyone is enjoying the spring, which is rapidly turning to summer now.... the evening fires have stopped for the time being, but I'm relishing morning naps in patches of bright sunlight every day instead. The "boys" of the household have been attempting to regulate their behavior to something close to tolerable while I've been ill... so all is right with the world!

Difficult Times

A photo of me taken recently
Well, I've been incommunicado for a time, but my dear house maid has been busy doing whatever it is that she does on this computer, and as I have no idea how to use the laptop, I've had to put my own meanderings on hold.

However, I think it is time I made a showing, as I have some rather difficult news to announce. My house maid noticed that there was a lump on my chest area and took me to the v**. She told the v** that she had also noticed lately that I've been drinking extra lots of water. Well, the v** did this and that and poked and prodded (as they will do) and took some kind of "tests".

Turns out that I have a severe uti infection (not sure what that is, exactly), and I am in beginning stages kidney failure, and the lump on my chest is cancer, although that is early stage as well.

My maid was given antibiotic liquid to give me for the infection, as nothing else can be treated, apparently, until that is cleared up. Needless to say, I was NOT fooled when she put it on my food, even when she presented me with white albacore people tuna, which I normally adore. I simply refused to eat it, and she knows better than to try to put it directly in my mouth.

So, back to the v** we went, and I was rewarded for my selective tastes with a shot of time-release antibiotic, and then 2 weeks later another one! According to my maid, the v** says that my infection is improving, and I have an appointment sometime in April (my maid refuses to tell me when!) for a re-evaluation of my condition.

All in all, I'm content with whatever my fate will be. I know in my heart that my maid has loved me all these years and that she will do what she can for my comfort. But with my 16th birthday only weeks away, lets face it, I'm no spring kitten! She cries, off and on, and is treating me with extra kindness, which I appreciate, but I wish she wouldn't cry. The price of love is loss.

I will endeavor to keep my friends updated with my progress, and in the meantime I will be carefully considering which of the four boys in my household I will entrust with continuing my blog. My maid snapped a photo of one of them, Winston, this afternoon that I thought rather charming:

At any rate, I'll leave you with a poem that I wrote about my maid, who is herself a poet of some repute. Perhaps I still have a year or two left in me to spend with her. Perhaps not. Time will tell.

A Poet's Friend

My home is where a poet dreams
of love and life and lore in verse.
When tumbling words elude, it seems
her calm and tranquil thoughts disburse.

But in a quiet reverie,

when words give way to weary sighs,
I come to share my poetry-
a murmur; gentle, soft and wise.

The poet's fingers, tired and curled,

find comfort in my sable coat
my soothing rumble smooths the world,
so poet's dreams can lift and float.

I wish that I could pause and stay-

my time with her is almost through.
Old age is calling me away.
I loved her well. I'm sure she knew.

Waiting for Summer

Winston at the Door
The weather has been nice lately, though not as warm as my maid would have it. She has taken to putting the cat scratch stools by the screen door and covering them with a blanket so that we can sit there and gaze out the door. Here is a picture of Winston, enjoying the view. I don't sit there much, but Charles seems to love to watch the birds from this new favorite spot! He insists that one day he is going to catch one, but I don't pay him any attention! He and Winston do enjoy the open door, though. They can have it!

My favorite person was here last week for a visit - my maid's eldest daughter who lives in some far-away place called California. It was wonderful to see her again, and I was like a piece of velcro, stuck to her all week! I have adored her since I was a kitten.

It is the consensus of the household that I am fairly deaf now, but I don't really mind. All part of being a senior, I suppose. Less chatter to bother about, anyway! Much quieter for successful napping!

Hoping all is well with all of you, out in the cat blogosphere. Enjoy the coming of summer!

Nigel and I

Nigel and I
Nigel and I had a nap on the futon this afternoon, which was very refreshing. Normally, Nigel spends his time (and his naps) with Malcolm, but Malcolm was busy sitting on the stool that the maid placed before the screen door for him to look out, along with Charles. Why those two are so interested in that front yard, I just don't understand! I'd much rather be napping.

No more talk of going  to the (v-word), but I have a feeling the maid is plotting against me. It's funny, the other felines here call her Mama, but to me she'll always be the maid. (My own mother was a beautiful seal point Siamese named Violet!) After all, she needs to remember that I am in charge of this household! (I don't think she doubts it, actually.)

p.s. - not sure how many of you may have seen this video, but it is quite a charming display by a smart little cat!

A Little Bit of Worry

Charles in the Window
Today was warm enough to have the windows open for the fresh air. Charles loves to sit in the window and watch the birds. He thinks he can catch one, but I know better!

My house maid is concerned for me. Apparently she has concluded that I don't hear very well anymore. She calls to me and makes loud noises and I don't turn. I've had a chronic yeast infection in my ears for many years that is un-treatable (because I refuse to let her do it!), so she is not sure if that has damaged my hearing or what. But hey, I'm 15 years old, I could just be getting hard of hearing. I did manage to hear her talking to her daughter about taking me to the (v-word), but I hope she doesn't go to that extreme. I'm perfectly happy, and it just means I don't have to listen to her chattering at me all the time! Honestly, half the time she doesn't make any sense anyhow.

Getting old for a cat is probably very similar to humans experience of it. One thing after another seems to go. At least I still have my looks, I know that. And my appetite is as healthy as ever! My maid complains about her memory going, but I'm as sharp as a tack. So there!

Sunday Snug

Nigel and Winston
Today was a relaxing Sunday for us. As you can see, Nigel and Winston managed to wedge themselves into the basket, which is clearly meant for just one cat! I would much rather nap on the couch, where there is plenty of room for curling up or stretching out, as the mood grabs me. But... to each his own!

Spring is slow to come, here on Cape Cod. It was too cold today for the maid to open the windows, so we all went out on the side porch and found puddles of sun to sit in for the afternoon. Not much news from our house this quiet day, as my maid has spent most of the day working on the computer. I'm glad she finally gave me the chance to at least touch base with all my friends here!

(ps: do you like my new music?)

A Milestone

Well, it has finally happened. I've officially reached old age! I had my 15th birthday this month, complete with a tuna fish cake, made for me by my maid and enjoyed by myself and my house mates. I must say, I think I look pretty good for an old gal! (this embarrassing photo was taken by my maid when I was bathing!) My house mates, Malcolm, Nigel, Winston and Charles are all well. Winston has transitioned nicely back into the household, and now he and Charles are the best of friends. You'd never know there had been so much friction between them! It is still cold up here on Cape Cod, though there have been a few days warm enough to have the windows open. My maid kindly puts pads on the window sills so we felines can sit and look out and get some fresh air. But, most nights are still chilly enough to enjoy the fireplace, which, of course, I love. My maid is well, and her daughter is still around, though she will be heading off to college in the fall (not sure exactly what college is, but once the other two children went there, we didn't see much of them anymore). There is word that my favorite of my maid's children will be coming home from California for a visit in June, which I very much look forward to. Well, at least now that I'm 15 I can legitimately share my years of wisdom with my friends. And pull rank on my house mates, but I've been doing that for years anyway! Hope all of you are having a pleasant spring.

A Visit From Someone Special

We had a visit from my housemaid's daughter! She was always my very favorite person, since I was a kitten, but we haven't seen much of her since she went to college. Now she lives in California, and we see her even less! So, whenever she is around, I stick to her like a piece of velcro. It was a treat to see her, and as you can tell, we had a lovely nap! She says she will be back for Christmas, which will make my holiday season extra nice. Did I say holiday season??? Yes, it's right around the corner! Better start thinking about it, I guess. Nah, it's a dark and rainy day today, I think it will be a day of ......... yup! - napping!

Warm Days

Malcolm & Nigel
Another unseasonably warm day, where Malcolm and Nigel were able to sit on the bed and watch out the open window (their favorite hobby). Soon the windows will need to be closed and the heat turned on, as autumn creeps ever closer to winter.

Update on the Winston saga! He has been joining the rest of us for dinner time in the kitchen, and has been seen wandering about the house. He even spent an hour or so relaxing on top of the TV cabinet this afternoon! The house maid is doing a pretty good job of keeping Charles from chasing him, and I think Charles is finally tiring of doing it anyway. It seems as if Winston will soon be among us for good, which will make the maid so very happy, as that will mean she can remove the litter box and food/water from the back bedroom!

I have asked the house maid to pick up some wood for a fire, because the weather will surely be turning soon, and I like my fire on a chilly evening. That is all my news for this evening. Till next time...

Hope For Winston

Brave Winston!
Well, it looks like there is some hope for Winston to re-join the rest of us in the main part of the house. My house maid is thrilled that he actually came out of the back bedroom several times last night, and ventured into the hallway and living room for short periods. Her problem now is to try and keep Charles (the naughty fellow!) from chasing him and scaring him off coming out. Fingers crossed that Winston's courage will prevail!

Poor Timid Winston!

Timid Winston

My house maid is quite frustrated today. This issue with Winston has gone on for too long! At first, Charles and Winston got along fine. But when Charles' hormones kicked in, before my maid had a chance to get him to the vet for his little "procedure", he became aggressive... but only towards Winston! Winston is a shy fellow anyway, and he was scared witless when Charles would chase him, growling and hissing! So, to have some level of peace in the house, Winston was housed in the back bedroom, complete with food dish, water and litter box, and the door was kept closed. This went on for a month or two before my maid was able to get the situation rectified. And after that, Charles was no longer aggressive in an angry way, but he still liked to chase Winston... I think he just likes to see him run! So, poor traumatized Winston is still afraid of him, and is still living in the back bedroom, which frustrates my maid, as she would like for Winston to be able to join the rest of us again. She has been working on getting Charles to stop chasing him in a variety of ways, with moderate success. Time will tell if the two of them will every be on friendly terms again!

Amazing!!

I wonder how many of my friends have seen this amazing photo of a most extraordinary cat who lives in my state! He has two faces! At first when I saw it, I felt sorry for the poor thing, but after I read the article, it turns out he is a healthy and happy fellow! A true feline hero. Check it out for yourself!

A Minor Tragedy

Ahh, the joy of a looong nap!
Well, it was an overcast day today, a little on the chilly side. And this is basically what I do on such days. I find the gray days to be totally uninspiring! Today I decided that the housemaid's blanket (which she mistakenly left on the couch) would be the perfect place for my extended cat nap. For once, none of the boys bothered me, and I must say I feel quite rested and refreshed now! The maid has been working on the computer all day, so I'm lucky to have found the time to check in with all my feline friends. Something strange did occur today, though, to interrupt the lazy pace. As I was napping, I was suddenly awakened by the sharp sound of what sounded like a large pebble or rock smacking against the storm window out on the side porch. My maid heard it too, and the two of us went to investigate. The window was not broken, thank goodness, but young Charles was sitting on the windowsill, staring intently out onto the ground below the window. The maid and I couldn't see what he was looking at, and she thought it might be the neighborhood tom cat who sometimes likes to tease Charles by jumping up at the window to startle him. So, she went outside to shoo the tom away, and I returned to my blanket.

When she came in, she reported that it wasn't the tom cat after all! There was a bird lying on its back on the ground beneath the window, nearly dead, but still barely breathing! The foolish thing must have flown full-force right into the window and smashed its beak hard enough to knock him out! Well, I guess he did more than knock himself out, for he was dead within a few minutes, and the maid was obliged to don some rubber gloves and remove him from the driveway. I didn't shed many tears myself, I'm not fond of birds, but I suppose it was a shame to have to go in that way. And that was the only event worth reporting for the day! I think I'll go see if there are any remnants of the tuna we had for lunch in the dish...... unless that rascal Charles has eaten it all by now. Thank-you all for stopping by my humble blog, and have a good evening! (or morning, or afternoon)
*and stop by our feline family's website if you have a moment!

Lazily Yours,

Good News and Bad News

Me, helping one of the maids do her homework

Well, I've got some good news and some bad news. My housemaid has been downsized at her other job, so apparently she's going to be working from home and trying to make ends meet writing God knows what on the computer. Which is the bad news. Not so much her job, I personally think she needs to spend more time working her full-time job here - this house gets out of control at times, and it's most annoying! Not to mention she'll be hogging the computer when I need to blog. Which brings me to the good news.... at least she will be here and about, when inspiration strikes me, and I'm fairly sure I can convince her to take a break from her work and take my dictation. Time will tell on that one.

Things are slowing down here at the House of Seven Cats (now down to five, but we like the name). Fall will make its appearance soon, and I for one am looking forward to long naps by a crackling fire again. The "issue" between Charles and Winston continues....... what, I didn't blog about the "issue"?? *SIGH* Well, it's a long story, so I'll save it for the next entry to go into the details. Trust me when I say that it has been quite a trial, and has at times made this house almost unlivable! Apart from those two, Nigel and Malcolm are doing well, I suppose. It is always a challenge for me to get by in a household with four male felines, and I the only lady! But, as you know, I never complain. I'm far too sophisticated to stoop to such a base level as to complain.

I do look forward to catching up with all the news of  my fellow feline bloggers over the next days and weeks. Best wishes to you all, wherever you are, and thank-you for stopping by to read my meanderings....

Sincerely Yours

Announcing My Return! (again)

Well, it has been quite some time since I have posted on my blog. I'm going to make a sincere effort to post, at least once a week, from now on. I realize there are so many out there who could benefit from my words of wisdom! I shall add a photo to this entry as soon as my maid gets the battery charger for her camera in the mail, the silly woman lost it somewhere!

By way of a quick update, we have added a new housemate to our foursome (myself plus Malcolm, Nigel and Winston). He came to us last spring as a kitten, and a most annoying one, I might add. His name is Charles Templeton, and I will admit that he has become a rather nice little chap, now that he's grown some and settled down. In fact, he reminds me of my Timmy, whom I still love and miss. Not in temperament, as Timmy was retiring and shy, and this fellow is a bold, sassy one! But, rather, in his affection for me and his kitten-like innocence - two traits of Timmy's that I so adored.

As for myself and the others, we are faring fine and have been enjoying good health and plenty of fireside naps this long winter. We are looking forward to spring, when the servants shall be directed to open the windows and place our pads on the sills so that we can all enjoy the fresh air and watch those maddening birds and squirrels who so love to taunt us!

More soon, and in the meanwhile I wish all of you and yours a wonderful week!

"Cat Nap"

My head maid has written a rather quaint poem about cat napping and I thought I would share it with my blogger friends, with her permission, of course.

Cat Nap

Exhaustion catches hold
at the end of an oppressive day.
I seek refuge with my mild feline companions.
They are always there -
quiet slumbering friends.
They lift their sleek heads
and blink slowly at me.
'Don't worry' they say
'Don't let your heart
be troubled'
Primly they rise, and take such utter joy
in stretching their supple limbs.
They wash their faces
with downy dampened paws.
Patiently they wait.
I change out of daytime clothes
put on an old flannel robe.
With relief I crawl onto the couch
and pull a blanket over me.
A stripedy ginger tabby
takes two delicate steps
onto my legs.
He searches my face
with green soulful eyes.
'Are you all right? Have a nap with me -
you'll feel better.'
He turns once and twice.
He kneads, his throat quietly crooning,
assuring me that napping
is the best remedy.
His warm body
and comforting weight
rest upon my legs.
His contented rolling lullaby
soothes me to drowsiness.
My fingers trace the silkiness
along his curving spine.
The world is safe and soft
and gently rumbling.
I can doze off now
and leave the haggard day behind -
suspended in warmth and sleepy sounds,
thankful for my companions
who tenderly purr my weariness away,
restoring peace.

Ahhhh!!!!

At long last the fireplace has been lit! I spent a lovely evening on the hassock in front of the warm fire last evening. The very best part of this time of year if you ask me!

The Striped Contingency

It was a rather warm day for November here on Cape Cod today. I had the maid open the windows for our sitting pleasure. After noon time though, it began to get chilly and she closed the windows again. We probably won't have many more window-opening days now before winter sets in. The striped contingency of the household, namely Malcolm and Winston, found a warm spot on the couch where the maid had taken a nap to sprawl out and relax. She refuses to fold up the blanket and put the pillows away until they decide to get up! Says she doesn't have the heart to disturb them. Well, if it was me doing the cleaning, I wouldn't allow two lazy loafers to delay me in my duties! It is so hard to find good help these days, I suppose I will leave her to her way of doing things. Especially since I saw that she had brought in some LOGS yesterday which means a potential warm fire to sleep in front of any day now!!
